With Intel's launch of the P55 chipset based Core i7 and i5 processors, we knew it would not be long until we saw a slew of motherboards with the P55 chip. Today is the first full review of one of such board from MSI! Our first example is the P55-GD65, which is priced right smack in the middle of P55 motherboards. That should give you an early indication as to where this board stacks up as far as features and performance are concerned. In actuality, this motherboard has an incredible number of features, which we will touch on shortly.

Some years back MSI decided to really attack the enthusiast motherboard market, and they seem to have succeeded in garnering quite a bit of attention for themselves. Before then, MSI had a reputation for cutting corners where they could, and producing a board which may not be up to snuff as compared to their primary competitor, Asus. Of course, before the Phenom launch there really wasn’t much excitement on the AMD side, so it was interesting to see MSI produce a really good AMD 790FX board at launch, the MSI K9A2 Platinum.

MSI is gearing up to expand its AM3 motherboard offer with a new model, the 760GM-E51. Seen below, the upcoming micro ATX motherboard is powered by the AMD 760G/SB710 pair and features support for AM3 processors (Phenom II, Athlon II), four DDR3-1600 memory slots, Radeon 3000 series integrated graphics, one PCI-Express x16 slot, and the Active Phase Switching (APS) PWM control function.

Introducing MSI’s Big Bang Trinergy Motherboard	Category: Motherboard

Since P55 was introduced, it seems like I’ve seen nonstop complaints about options for running multiple graphics cards. This is because most P55 boards only have a total of 16x PCIe lanes available, to be divided between however many cards you happen to be running. So for an SLI or Crossfire setup, you’re only going to get 8x/8x speeds. The difference between 16x/16x and 16x/8x and 8x/8x (and so on) have been well documented. This bandwidth limit seems like just another obstacle for the P55 platform.

When MSI launched their first wave of P55 motherboards the results where nothing other than stunning. In fact the enthusiast segment MSI P55 GD80 we reviewed at the time was loaded with devotee features and options. There where a couple of wishes left undesired though, especially the 8x--8x PCIe lanes configuration for SLI and CrossfireX users was a thorn in the eyes of many of you. As such, MSI went back to the drawing board, came up with a solution and decided to further improve the MSI P55 GD80 concept. The end result is called the Big-Bang series motherboards -- yes we'll try to not make any jokes on choice of wording on 'Big Bang'.

MSI Big Bang Trinergy vs Asus Sabertooth 55i	Category: Motherboard

This time, MSI is the Big Bang Trinergy in our test, which places the emphasis on the multi-GPU mode. Normally, the P55 chipset motherboards are the only one of x8 links will be provided so that the cards on full power can not go out. To get around this installed MSI adding NF200 chip, which allows that to address the cards in SLI or CrossFire mode with full access. In addition, triple SLI and CrossfireX is possible with higher bandwidths of x16, x8 and x8. The Trinergy is the first motherboard in the "Big Bang" series and more will follow, including one with the Lucid Hydra-chip mixed operation between Nvidia and ATI makes cards. An exact date for this version is not yet known, while the MSI Trinergy Big Bang will be available shortly. In addition to these the NF200 chip, the motherboard still has a few other nice features that we will explain in more detail in the following pages. In addition, we also explain their NF200 chip, and will see how he does in practice. We thank MSI for the provision of a warm samples.
